Inclusive School Based ABA Therapies

A teacher using school based ABA Therapy to help a child

Small Steps provides a variety of services in Dubai to support families at home, school and in our centre. We provide quality behavioural services based on the principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis. Our therapy methods are directed towards helping each individual to increase their overall independence and improve their quality of life by initiating comprehensive assessments such as VB-MAPP and ABLLS-R. We also provide an extensive functional assessment/analysis.

Dubai autism ABA inclusion centre

New inclusive school based ABA programmes for children with autism in Dubai’s inclusive centre in GEMS Metropole School.

We understand that there is no single solution for the treatment of autism, therefore each plan is specifically tailored for each individual client and implemented in a distraction-free environment by a highly trained behaviour therapist. We design our programs to utilise teaching techniques that have been scientifically proven to be the most effective. These techniques include errorless teaching, teaching to fluency, mixing easy and difficult tasks, and mixing and varying targets. Our teaching strategies focus on breaking down certain skills into smaller, teachable parts and then providing reinforcement contingent upon correct responses. We also address deficits in the areas of communication, social skills, visual performance, receptive language, play skills, self-help, gross motor, fine motor, vocal imitation, requesting, labelling, intraverbal, mand training, answering questions and conversational skills.

We provide education, training, treatment, and consultation services within GEMS Metropole School. It’s a newly built school, offering high quality education for students from foundation state through to year 10. We also give consultation at our centre in Jumeira Village Circle, to individual families; and other behavioural and non-behavioural professionals.

In addition to individual behaviour program development and staff training and development, Small Steps also conducts training courses, workshops, and seminars designed to teach others how to provide the most effective education and treatment possible.

We are certain that each individual has the potential to lead a productive and functional life if given the proper guidance and correct tools to do so. Thus, it is our responsibility at Small Steps to provide our 13 clients with the tools they require. These tools include communicational skills, play skills, social skills, behaviour management, and functional living skills. We are dedicated to striving that each client leaves with the ability to successfully use the skills taught to function in their everyday life.

All sessions in the inclusive centre are 1:1 (1 tutor for 1 child) and utilise procedures in Applied Behaviour Analysis. Our therapists are highly trained and are required to attend professional development workshops throughout the year. We employ therapists who are experienced in Applied Behaviour Analysis programmes, RBT (Registered Behaviour Technician) certified (or school autism programmesundergoing certification) and are completing their required supervision hours. All sessions are overseen by a qualified ABA consultant on-site and weekly supervision feedback is given to each therapist. The 1:1 therapist will collect data on both skill acquisition and behaviour reduction programmes. All data is thoroughly analysed and updated on a weekly basis by the ABA consultant. There are more than 1 tutors dedicated in the child’s programme, so that generalization can be achieved.

All programmes are inclusive, meaning that we provide all the associated staff (Applied Behaviour Analysts, programme supervisors and therapists, as well as speech and language therapists and Occupational therapists) needed for a targeted and fully controlled treatment in order for the child to be taught more consistently all the essential skills, such as communication, play skills, social interaction skills, self-help skills, academic skills etc.

The programme is designed especially for the child’s needs taking under consideration his strengths and weaknesses as well as the family’s individual needs. Small Steps uses techniques derived from Applied Behaviour Analysis research such as

  • Verbal Behaviour (VB),
  • Functional Communication Training (FCT),
  • Pivotal Response Training (PRT),

School-Based ABA Therapies: Empowering All Children to Unlock Their Full Potential

The children of today are the drivers of tomorrow, which is why everybody in this world deserves an equal chance to get to where they want to be in life. However, sometimes, children that view the world a little differently are left behind, especially when forced to learn in environments that don't take their specific needs into account.

In reality, conditions such as autism, Asperger's syndrome, ADHD and a variety of other behavioural disorders don't need to prevent children from getting ahead in life. Children with such conditions just need to be treated, taught and respected as the unique individuals they are, and thanks to our school-based ABA therapies, they can be.

Here at Small Steps, we're a team of highly experienced ABA consultants and behavioural analysists who develop and oversee the implementation of specialised learning programmes for children with a broad range of behavioural conditions. We know that conditions such as autism needn't be a huge detriment to a child's future – they're just small obstacles that should be factored into learning programmes so that all children can unlock their full potential and lead happy lives.
